If you are thinking about buying a Jeep, then this question may be on your mind; “Where are Jeeps made?”

Consumers in the US are concerned about the quality of those products manufactured in other places around the world. So before you buy a Jeep, it will be good to know where it is made and who really owns the brand.

Where are Jeeps Made? Short Answer

Most Jeeps are manufactured here in the US. Willys-Overland originally manufactured these vehicles for military use from a plant in Toledo, Ohio. Stellantis, a multinational group, is now the owner of the brand. Due to this, Jeep is prized not just by off-road fans but also by those who won’t buy products made in the US.

Among current Jeep models, the Gladiator, Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, and the Wrangler are assembled in America. The Gladiator and the Wrangler are manufactured in Toledo, Ohio, which is the brand’s headquarters. Cherokees are made in the Belvidere plant in Illinois. The Jeep Patriot was produced, which is no longer in production. Detroit, Michigan, is where Grand Cherokees are made. However, one thing to note is that some parts are manufactured in other countries. But by and large, these vehicles are mostly made in the USA.

But due to the increasing popularity of Jeeps, the group now operates plants in different countries across the world as well, like Mexico, India, China, Brazil, and Italy. The Compass and the Renegade are made in foreign plants. Jeep has 10 plants in the US and other parts of the world.

Key Places Where Jeep is Manufactured

When World War 2 was going on, Willys-Overland started manufacturing Jeeps as military vehicles for the US army. These vehicles were produced in Toledo, Ohio. When the war was over, the company started manufacturing civilian Jeeps called CJ Jeeps. During the following decades, ownership changed several times.

Willys-Overland first merged with a company called Kaiser Motors. They produced the well-known Kaiser Jeep, also known as the KJ Jeep. American  Motors Corporation then purchased Kaiser Motors. Renault made supplementary investments in 1979. Jeep was then purchased by Daimler Chrysler, known as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Stellantis is now the current owner of the group. Although ownership has changed multiple times, the headquarters of the brand has always stayed in Toledo, Ohio.

The plant in Toledo was upgraded in 2006 so that the Jeep Wrangler could be manufactured. There are now 2 main units operating in Toledo, Ohio. These are the Parkway Annex and the Stickney Plant. The former is where the Willys-Overland factory was originally built.

Detroit, Michigan

Since 1993, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has been built in Detroit, Michigan, in the Jefferson North Assembly Plant. This is the only industrial unit situated inside Detroit city’s limits. Chrysler did this to support production in America.

The Jefferson North Assembly plant was first built in 1991 and upgraded in 1999. From 2006 to 2010, this plant manufactured the Jeep Commander. This plant is also where the Dodge Durango is assembled.

Melfi, Italy

Chrysler filed for bankruptcy in 2014, and it subsequently merged with Fiat, an automaker based in Italy. This gave rise to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

Production of the Jeep Compass was then shifted from Belvidere, Illinois, towards Melfi in Italy. After the merger was completed, Jeep also started producing the Jeep Renegade. This vehicle was made mainly in Melfi. The Compass and the Renegade are manufactured beside the Fiat 500x.

Goiana, Brazil

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles started making vehicles in the FCA Jeep Assembly Complex located in Goiana. This place is situated in the northeast of Brazil. The production facility spans 6.2 million square feet. It includes the assembly plant, stamping units, research and development centers, a 1.5-kilometer test track, and an employees’ training unit.

The Compass and the Renegade are manufactured here in Goiana for the market in South America. These vehicles are produced beside the Fiat Toro. After the Goiana production facility commenced operations, Brazil is only second to the US in Jeep Renegade and Compass sales.

Guangzhou, China

The GAC Group is a Chinese automaker based in Guangzhou, China. Fiat Chrysler entered into a joint venture with this group and started production in 2015 in China. The Guangzhou plant manufactures the Compass, Renegade, and the Cherokee.
