We all misplace things at times. Perhaps you are outdoors, driving your vehicle off-road. You then notice that your spare keys are missing and that you cannot find them.

There is no need to worry since this happens to many people. So you are not alone.

You will be wondering then from where you can get new keys. And equally importantly, how much they will cost you.

How Much Does a New Jeep Key Cost?

A couple of options are available if you need new keys. The good old-fashioned ignition key will cost you only $10 to $15, so it’s no big deal. Costs can go up to $250 if you go to a dealer cut and program a new key.

Hence, you should know all your available options so that you replace your keys when needed.

It should be obvious at this point that there is a pretty big range of costs involved when replacing the key. You will be wondering what choices are available to replace the keys. This will depend on your situation as well as your preferences.

Jeep Key Replacement Options

When looking for replacements, it is not just a matter of picking up your new key from a hardware store or your locksmith. You will first have to decide what kind of key you want.

Here are your options.

Ignition Key

Getting just an ignition key is quite simple. You can make spare ignition keys for all models of Jeep at any hardware store. You can try out Ace Hardware or Home Depot when you can get the job done quickly and easily.

As discussed previously, the ignition key is the cheapest option you can have when making spare keys.

To get your spare ignition, you will have to provide a master key so that it can be copied. It would be a good idea to keep a spare key for your Jeep since there is a possibility that your master key can be lost.

This is, by far, the least expensive option. You can make a spare ignition key from your local hardware store for up to $15. You should take your master key to a hardware store like Home Depot or Lowes to make your spare ignition key there.

This is the most convenient and quickest way of getting spare keys for your Jeep.

However, you should bear in mind that getting an ignition key for a newer Jeep model may not be possible. This is because a chip replacement is also required. Hence, you should check your Jeep model and year to know whether or not you can get an ignition key.

If your Jeep is one of the newer models, an ignition key may not be an option.

However, before you go over to your local hardware store to make a spare ignition, you should first confirm whether they provide key-making service in the first place.

Spare Key Fob

If you are interested in keyless entry, you may want to get a spare key fob. This is obviously going to cost more because such keys are more sophisticated.

You should call up your hardware store to find out whether or not they make key fobs. You can even check out their website to find out whether such a service is available.

If you want a spare key fob most inexpensively, here is what you can do. Place an online order for a blank key fob. When you receive the key fob, it can be locally programmed. Ace Hardware and other such hardware stores offer this service.

Making and programming the key fob at a hardware store may be cheaper than getting it from a Jeep dealership. Just to make sure, you should call up both to find out what they are charging, and based on that, you can pick who gets to make your key fob.

If you look for your options, you may be able to have this job done for under $100. If your Jeep key requires replacement, then you can call your Jeep dealer to understand your options.

Replacing the Key Fob

If you have lost your master key, your options will be more expensive.

There is a small chance that you may be able to get a replacement at Ace Hardware or Sears. But it is more likely that you will have to pay a visit to your Jeep dealership so that the job is done.

If your Jeep is relatively new, then there is a higher chance that you will have to go to your local dealership. This is because the key, as well as the key fob, are more updated and sophisticated. If you face this situation, then you may have no option besides this.

https://youtu.be/TESwPdWpR10Video can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: Program Jeep Key with Only One Key (No Dealership) (https://youtu.be/TESwPdWpR10)

You can expect to pay an amount starting from $120 to a maximum of $250. The final cost will depend on the Jeep model you drive and the dealership rates.

This option will be the most expensive since you are replacing quite sophisticated equipment. .

Bottom Line

If you are willing to go for an ignition key and your Jeep model allows it, then your cost will be far less. But if you need to program a key fob, then the cost will be at least $100.

Wondering what is the red lightning bolt symbol on a Jeeps dashboard? Perhaps you may not understand what all warning signs appearing on your Jeep dashboard mean. But it is

Wondering what is the red lightning bolt symbol on a Jeeps dashboard?

Perhaps you may not understand what all warning signs appearing on your Jeep dashboard mean. But it is important to know what this key warning sign means.

The red lightning bolt symbol on the Jeep dashboard means that the Electronic Throttle Control has a problem.

The Electronic Throttle Control or ETC is what replaced the previous mechanical system with an electronic sensor. It gauges the force that you exert on the throttle using sensors. It then transmits this information to the motor that opens the throttle in proportion to the force you have applied.

*WARNING: Before you go out on any trails, please read through my list of essentials here. I could save your life!

Red Lightning Bolt Symbol in a Jeep

In older vehicle models, the throttle and gas pedal were connected via a cable. The pressure exerted on the gas influenced how much the throttle would open. This controlled how much gas was allowed to enter.

This mechanism was not particularly efficient due to higher fuel consumption. It was in response to this that the Electronic throttle control emerged.

This electronic technology was first implemented in vehicles during the nineties. Its purpose was to replace the older system that was not very efficient with a new electronically controlled system that was more efficient.

However, the electronic system can suffer faults at times. The red lightning bolt gives you a warning when this happens. It means that your electronic throttle control system has a fault.

When this light switches on, it implies that communication between the throttle and the gas pedal is not happening the way it should. You will have to carry out a gas pedal reset when this happens.

What Should I Do When the Red Lightning Bolt Sign Flashes On?

If the red lightning bolt sign is activated when driving, stopping is not necessary. You can go on driving. However, you will need to get your Jeep checked by a professional. If it does not work, you may have to carry out a pedal reset or get it done by a qualified mechanic.

How to Reset the Electronic Throttle Control

If the red lightning bolt sign switches on, it implies that the pedal is out of position. Due to this misalignment, the pedal cannot communicate properly with the sensors that are controlling the throttle.

How much the throttle opens or closes depends on the position of the gas pedal. After driving your Jeep for a certain amount of time, there is a chance that the gas pedal may get misaligned. However, resetting it is not that hard.

Here is how you can reset it. Turn the key on but don’t start the vehicle. Now press the gas pedal down fully on the floor and let it come back to its original position.

After that is done, you should start your vehicle. Depress the pedal and take careful note of how your Jeep responds. If the red lightning bolt sign does not go away, you may have to sort it out by taking it to a mechanic.

It is best to take your Jeep to a mechanic as soon as you see the red lightning bolt or any other warning light.

Here is what other warning lights mean.

Battery Charge Warning

This warning light is shaped by a red battery that shows the positive and negative terminals. There is a plus sign towards the right side of the battery and a negative sign towards the left side of the battery.

This light flashes when there is a problem with the vehicle battery. The battery may need to be replaced. So you should take your vehicle to the nearest service center to get it checked.

Electric Power Steering Fault Warning

Jeep makes use of power steering so that you can have a smoother driving experience. However, there may be times when you feel that there is a problem with how the steering functions. You can look down towards the dashboard and confirm a problem if the electric power steering light has switched on.

This light has the shape of steering along with an exclamation mark placed on the right. This warning light will appear in red to indicate a problem with the steering that needs to be addressed. It is best to take your Jeep to the nearest service center.

Brake Warning

The brake warning light can switch on for various reasons. There is an easy way for you to determine a problem with the brakes. The brake warning light shows up as the word “BRAKE” where all capital letters are in red.

It can be activated when the parking brake is engaged. So this could be a reason for the brake warning flashing on. However, if your brake is not activated and the brake warning light has flashed on, it is likely that you have a brake problem that can be fixed by a service center near you.

Anti-Lock Braking System Warning

The Anti-Lock Braking System light flashes on with the capital letters “ABS” inside a circle. ABS is the system in your vehicle that prevents it from skidding. If there is a problem with the ABS, then this light will switch on in yellow. It is best to get your vehicle checked if this happens.

Engine Check Light

The Engine Check Light is one of the most common lights that can be seen on the dashboard. It can display for various reasons. The engine may be misfiring or the transmission may have a problem.

When this yellow light switches on, you should go to your service center to have it fixed.

Tire Pressure Warning

The tire pressure warning light will show in yellow when the air pressure inside your tires is too low. This sign appears in the form of an exclamation mark inside a horseshoe. There will be wavy lines underneath it.

Your tires must be inflated to the optimal pressure level if they are to maintain traction and grip on the road. If the pressure is too low, then the traction could reduce substantially creating the risk of an accident. Hence, you should get your tires checked for pressure as well as any possible holes that are causing the fall in pressure.

Bottom Line

You now have a better idea of what various common warning lights on your Jeep dashboard mean. It is best to take the vehicle to your mechanic to have the issue addressed as soon as possible.

If you are interested in towing Jeeps and trailers, then you will need a truck camper for this task. Truck campers are versatile vehicles that can serve you in many

If you are interested in towing Jeeps and trailers, then you will need a truck camper for this task. Truck campers are versatile vehicles that can serve you in many different ways. You may want to tow a Jeep if you plan outdoor trips in your truck camper.

You will first have to know how a Jeep Wrangler can be rigged in the first place so that you can tow it without a fuss. You will have to take care of several items, including a hitch box extension, safety hooks, tow bar, electrical wiring, and tow bar brackets.

You will see how to tow a Jeep Wrangler four-down. It is not hard to understand why. Jeep Wrangler is a vehicle that is ideal for towing four-down. In fact, it is among the few models that have this ability.

For towing four-down, you will need a tow bar, among other hardware items. You can purchase an adjustable tow bar for a little over $100. You can also find other fancy tow bars that cost a few hundred dollars. However, you can get good value for money with inexpensive tow bars rated for towing up to 5,000 pounds. This should be more than enough for your needs.

1. Tow Bar Installation

The first step entails installing a tow bar bracket on the Jeep bumper. This is a fairly simple task. With the help of Torx fitting, you should first unbolt the Jeep bumper.

To install the tow bar brackets, you must first detach the 2 bumper pads on the OEM bumper. If you are lucky enough, there may be preexisting bumper pad holes on which you can install the tow bar brackets.

You can mount the tow bars at a distance of 24 to 40 inches from each other on the Jeep bumper.

At this point, you will obviously have a key question on your mind. You might be wondering whether the relatively thin bumper is capable of withstanding the force that the tow bar brackets will exert on it. The issue with the bumper is that it is not stout enough. As a consequence, you will have to make use of the support plates to reinforce them.

These may be included in your tow bar kit. If you choose this method, your Jeep will be just fine. Several Jeep owners have safely towed their vehicles over hundreds of miles fairly easily and safely using this straightforward method.

https://youtu.be/NIp_btVN8sgVideo can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: DIY Tow Bar Bracket for Jeep Wrangler (https://youtu.be/NIp_btVN8sg)

2. Safety Chain Installation

A tow bar by itself is not sufficient no matter how stout it might be. There is always the possibility that the tow bar could break. In such a case, you need to have safety chains as a backup to restrain the Jeep and to prevent it from breaking loose. The safety chain could help you prepare for any such emergency.

However, to attach these safety chains securely to your Jeep, you will first have to install attachment points on your Jeep where the chains can be connected. Suitable points can be either D-rings or tow hooks.

But there is a chance that your Jeep may have none of these. In that case, you will have to find something suitable that you can bolt to your Jeep. You can get a pair of towing hooks fairly inexpensively. You can mount these directly on the upper horizontal part of your bumper.

A major benefit of bolting these hooks on your Jeep is that you will be able to easily tow the vehicle when it gets stuck. No matter how good you are at off-road driving, a time will come when your Jeep will inevitably be stuck.

That is when you can pull your Jeep out by means of the hooks that you bolted to it. So these hooks serve a dual purpose. They can provide safety while your truck camper is towing your Jeep and they can be of great use if your Jeep ever gets stuck.

3. Towing Lights

Towing lights may be legally required in your area. To fulfill this need and to comply with traffic rules, you can purchase removable tail lights. If you want, you can also use a hard-wire diode kit that can connect with the wiring of your Jeep tail lights. The latter is a more permanent solution so you can decide to go this route.

You should know the purpose behind these diodes. They stop the truck’s electric current from going back and damaging the electric parts of the Jeep. When you hard-wire the Jeep, there is one recommendation that you should follow. The wires passing via the engine compartment should be protected with flex tubing since this part can become very hot when the vehicle is running.

Four wires are normally used to connect with the towing lights. You can protect the wiring that passes externally by wrapping it in flex tubing, covered with insulating tape.

4. Supplemental Brakes

Your state may require supplemental brakes. Even if it is not required, you can install a supplemental braking system for the sake of safety. You should also ensure that your truck camper brakes are heavy-duty and strong. That is because they will have to handle the combined force of the moving truck camper as well as the Jeep hitched to it.

With supplemental brakes, you should be able to stop both the truck camper and the Jeep easily in time without problems.

5. Hitch Extension Box

You may or may not need this hardware equipment. If there is some distance between the truck camper and your Jeep, you can install a hitch box extension to take care of it.

There will be enough distance between your truck camper and Jeep with the extension. Hence, you will be able to take sharp turns more easily and brake to a halt without problems. The extension can help maintain a good clearance.

There are a couple of tips that you can use when choosing the hitch box extension. If you want to have an extension that measures more than 39 inches, make sure that there are support chains on the extension to minimize side-to-side movement.

To achieve this, you may have to weld a special plate with the extension. As far as the hitch is concerned, you must ensure that the hitch ball size is correct. The shank should have enough strength to support your Jeep.

Also, you should make sure that when the Jeep is hitched to your truck camper, the tow bar should be more or less level. This is vital, especially if you have not installed supplemental brakes. This will make stopping and controlling much easier.

You will have all the necessary hardware for flat towing your Jeep Wrangler when you do this.

6. Jeep Wrangler Flat Towing

Do you face Jeep Wrangler rust issues? You may want to know how to prevent your Jeep from rusting. Even if you go the extra mile in maintaining your vehicle,

Do you face Jeep Wrangler rust issues? You may want to know how to prevent your Jeep from rusting.

Even if you go the extra mile in maintaining your vehicle, it will start rusting at some point. Owners of 4-wheel drive vehicles and SUVs like Jeep Wranglers might experience greater rust problems due to off-road driving.

However, you can take certain steps to reduce rust development and clear it if it forms.

Cause of Rust

Oxidation is what causes rust to form. This happens when oxygen from air undergoes a chemical reaction with iron from the metallic alloy. While the Jeep Wrangler is rusting, oxygen from moist air reacts with iron in the metal frame.

Jeep Wranglers have a heavy-duty metal frame comprising various metal panels. However, other kinds of automobiles have various composite and plastic panels to reduce both weight and cost. Due to this reason, the Jeep Wrangler has a greater surface area that is exposed to potential rust.

Troublesome Parts

A big reason why Jeep Wranglers can potentially develop more rust is because of the way they are driven. Since the Jeep Wrangler is a highly capable SUV that can handle all sorts of terrains, its drivers often use it for off-road driving.

Although off-road driving may sound like great fun to many, it is not exactly ideal for the metal body of your Jeep Wrangler. The Jeep Wrangler may be struck by tree limbs, big rocks, and small pebbles during off-road excursions. A large amount of dust can also batter the metal frame of the Jeep Wrangler. This has an unfortunate effect on the Jeep body’s paint. The paint may wear off as a result of all these harsh impacts. The metal body underneath the paint will then be exposed to moist air, due to which rust can develop.

The area surrounding the fender is one place where rust commonly develops since this part is struck quite often by the debris and stones that the vehicle’s wheels are constantly hurling. Damage ensues due to this factor, and the paint will slowly come off, exposing the metal underneath. The area exposed thus may then start rusting.

Preventing Rust in Jeep Wrangler

You may have realized that avoiding off-road driving is one way to slow down rust formation on your Jeep Wrangler. However, even with normal driving on the road, rust can develop. This is due to several factors. Humidity is the key reason why rust will form on your Jeep. This is something that you cannot avoid. The moisture in the air will ultimately reach the metal frame, where it will react with iron in the metal frame. The result is rusting.

Maintenance is necessary for reducing rust formation. Hence, you should clean your vehicle regularly and apply wax to it. You can also think of installing plastic fenders to avoid rusting in this trouble spot.

If you find damage anywhere on the body, you should have it fixed quickly to minimize rusting.

Rust Removal

When rust inevitably forms, you can do a few things. What steps you take depends on your budget and the amount of rust that has developed. In case there is a lot of rust, you may have to replace whole body panels. Or you can use some kind of filler material for repairing damage in those parts from where you have cleaned a lot of rust.

For smaller amounts of rust, you can remove it using fine-grit sandpaper. If you are finding it too hard to remove rust this way, you can try applying a product for oxide conversion to eliminate the rust that remains. You can prime and apply paint to this area that is being repaired. You should also apply another coat of paint to minimize rust development.

Warranty Coverage

The warranty provided by parent group Chrysler may cover extreme rust damage in certain cases. The warranty for rust repair extends to 100,000 miles or five years. But this warranty covers only an extreme amount of rust damage. This warranty only covers rust damage that has made a hole in the body of the Jeep Wrangler. This means that surface rust is not included in the warranty. This is the owner’s responsibility to either prevent or repair.

You can remove a small amount of rust fairly easily using fine-grit sandpaper or an electric orbital machine. For any rust that you cannot remove this way, you can coat it using an oxide converter for removal.

You can then apply a body filler made of fiberglass. Automotive Touch Up supplies different kinds of body fillers. You can apply one of these products to the rust-affected area after removing rust from here. They can cure quickly, are durable, and you can sand them in around 20 minutes or so. The Premium Filler adheres very firmly to sanded parts and also primer-covered surfaces.

You can prime and paint the rust-affected patch using POR-15 paint (POR stands for Paint Over Rust). This is a specially formulated paint to prevent rust from developing. You can apply it to surfaces that have rusted to prevent further rusting.

Automotive Touch Up paints all standard colors of Jeep Wranglers and other Jeep models. Hence, you should ensure that the selected paint exactly matches the paint color of your Jeep. The brand provides paint in 2 ounces and 0.5-ounce bottles. For smaller repair work, you can also buy their paint pens. Aerosols and spray guns are also available for faster painting.

You can apply a clear protective coat of paint to stop further rusting and salt or weather damage.

Bottom Line

If you have Jeep rust issues, you can take care of them using the methods mentioned above. We hope it was a great read for you!

Jeep starts then dies right away? This will undoubtedly be frustrating for you, but how can one avoid it?

Several problems could be causing this issue. If you are lucky, you might fix this problem without using special tools. But it could also be due to a mechanical failure that is costly to repair.

Here are the possible causes.

Poor Battery Connection

The engine needs current from a battery to function as intended. This is possible only if there is a stable connection. But if the connection is loose, then engine operation might become unreliable. This could be one of the possible reasons why the engine is starting up but shutting down soon after.

To determine if this is the possible cause, you need to look at the battery closely. In particular, you need to check the terminals. Are they corroded? Are the cables damaged or in poor condition?

You can use WD-40 or some other degreaser to clean up grubby battery terminals. If the terminals have collected dirt, then cleaning it off using a degreaser could do the trick.

However, if the problem persists, then you think about using another battery. Or you could try testing this battery on another vehicle (that works fine) to find out if it is a battery issue. If the battery is the problem, you can relax knowing that battery replacements are cheaper than replacing many other parts.

So checking out the battery and ensuring that it is functioning properly is a good starting point.

Fuel Pump Problems

If the battery is fine, then you should inspect the fuel pump. The main function of a fuel pump is to take gas from the fuel tank and inject it into the engine at the right rate. So if the fuel pump has malfunctioned, the engine won’t be able to run properly.

However, you can do little about a defective fuel pump apart from letting a good mechanic take over.

Removing the fuel pump is not recommended. It could spill gasoline which is hazardous.

If the fuel pump is leaking or has some other problem, the best thing to do is to take your vehicle to a mechanic.

As a part of regular maintenance, make sure that you replace the filter at recommended intervals to prevent blocked fuel flow. The filter needs replacement when the vehicle has been driven between 40,000 miles and 80,000 miles in general. Check with the manufacturer manual to find out exactly when you should change the filter.

Replacing the filter with a clean new one is not that hard, so it is something that you might do yourself.

However, you should be very careful about spilled fuel. So you should know about the process. If you have any doubt, take no chances and talk to a mechanic to get the job done safely.

Fuel Injection Sensor

The fuel injection sensor communicates the fuel remaining in the tank to the vehicle computer. If this sensor has malfunctioned, then the engine control unit (ECU) will not be able to send fuel at the right flow rate. This could mean too much or too little gas for the engine, both of which are detrimental.

Once more, you will have to hand over this problem to professionals to deal with complex parts correctly.

OBD2 scanners are useful for diagnosing problems with electronic parts. If you want to find out what is causing the problem, then you can buy one such scanner from an auto store for a relatively low price. As a first step, your mechanic will use the OBD2 scanner to get the error code that will diagnose the problem.

Ignition Problem

The engine depends on the spark plug to generate sparks at precisely timed intervals to be combustion of the fuel/air mixture inside the cylinder. Problems with ignition are a frequent cause of the engine stalling soon after starting.

If you know how it’s done, you can try taking out the spark plug to clean off any dirt if it is there. However, you will need to be patient to access the spark plugs. Before you remove the spark plugs, make sure that you take a close look at the cables connecting them to the electric circuit of your vehicle. These cables should not be worn or frayed. Take a close look in particular at the connection.

If the issue is not remediated by cleaning up spark plugs or obvious damage to your spark plugs, you will have to replace them. Depending on the year of manufacture and make of your Jeep, a spark plug set for Jeep will cost around $30 to $60. if the cables connecting the spark plugs are damaged, then you can get them replaced for a relatively low price.

Engine Control Unit Issue

If your engine sensors are working as intended, then things can go wrong if the ECU malfunctions. That is because the ECU utilizes information that your engine sensors are producing. If the ECU cannot process the information correctly, it will not provide the right fuel rate for the engine to work smoothly. In addition, a faulty ECU may be unable to provide crucial signals to different engine parts, which can cause the engine to malfunction and shut down.

The OBD2 scanner can diagnose the ECU problems if it is causing the issue. If a scanner is available, then you can use it to read the error code that the vehicle is providing. However, if you don’t want to do it, then you can always take the vehicle to a mechanic so that experts can scan it.

Malfunctioning Alarm System

The alarm system could be behind this problem. If the electronic anti-theft system thinks the vehicle is being stolen, it will cut off the fuel flow. The problem is that a false alarm can be triggered due to a few reasons. Faulty keys are a common cause of this issue.

There are chips within car keys these days which inform the vehicle computer that you are the actual owner who can start the vehicle. If the chip is malfunctioning, then this problem can arise.

Likewise, if the chip scanner within the vehicle is faulty, it won’t read your key chip properly and identify it as valid. This can cause the anti-theft system to be activated, due to which the engine will shut down.

If you think that this is a possible cause, then you should let a mechanic check your vehicle.

Low Fuel Pressure

Fuel injection engines require the right fuel pressure to keep running smoothly. If there is not enough fuel pressure, then the engine will cease running. There are various reasons for insufficient fuel pressure.

Most often, it is due to a faulty fuel pump. The fuel pump may be providing sufficient pressure during engine start, but not enough to continuously run the engine.

The gas tank is where the fuel pump is located. However, an engine port lets you measure the fuel pressure using a gauge that can be obtained from an auto store. You can use this instrument to check out the fuel pressure. You should take the key towards the on position with the gauge in position. Check the fuel pressure. Then you should start up the engine.

Is there an immediate drop in fuel pressure? Does it fall back to 0? If it goes down to zero and won’t come back up again, there could be a problem with the fuel pump’s relay. If the pressure goes down, the engine shuts down, and the fuel pressure rises again, it could be a bad fuel filter or an issue with the fuel pump.

A good mechanic will use a scanner to determine the voltage across the fuel pump’s relay. The voltage should be constant.

MAF Sensor

MAF stands for “mass airflow”. As the name implies, the function of the MAF sensor is to measure how much air is entering the engine. It is located between the throttle and the air filter. This is a vital component for measuring the air/fuel ratio.

If the mass airflow sensor malfunctions, then as you may have guessed, the engine will shut down. Check the wiring harness to confirm that it is properly connected. Take a close look at the whole wire to find any sign of burning or damage.

If the mass airflow sensor is not working properly, the engine could run erratically or shut down.

The mass airflow sensor determines the air density at the manifold intake. It supplies this value to ECU, which then uses values obtained from other sensors to control the flow of fuel into the cylinder.

If you find out that a new mass airflow sensor is required, they are fairly inexpensive. You can replace them quite quickly since they are found easily beside the airbox.

Bottom Line

You can connect a code scanner to find the trouble code. This will tell you what’s going wrong with your vehicle. However, you should bear in mind that the aforementioned reasons are the most common causes, and they are likely behind the problem

Take your vehicle to a mechanic to confirm the problem.

Whenever you think about getting a jeep, you ask yourself, are jeeps expensive to maintain?

You might be asking this question if you are interested in buying a Jeep. However, it is not that simple. Jeeps have a reputation for being costly to maintain.

The simple answer is that it depends on your usage. If you push the Jeep to its limits, it will break down more often and will require more frequent expensive repairs. That will make it more expensive to maintain.

But if you drive your Jeep carefully on easy trails and city roads, then it won’t break down that frequently. In that case, its maintenance costs will be roughly equal to that of most SUVs. So with careful driving, Jeeps are not that costly to maintain.

So the assertion that jeeps are costly to maintain is not necessarily true. Maintenance costs of the vehicle are more or less equal to the national average. That’s a good thing since the Jeep is a 4-wheel drive vehicle.

There are plenty of Jeep dealerships that can provide spare parts and components for your vehicle if something breaks. There is also a huge aftermarket where you can buy all sorts of Jeep parts and modify your Jeep according to your personal preferences.

Due to the strong competition in the automotive sector, buyers can enjoy reduced and attractive prices.

You can read further to determine what maintenance costs are expected for various Jeep models.

Jeep Maintenance Costs – the Reality

The common perception is that jeeps are expensive to maintain. However, this statement is far from true. Jeep maintenance costs are not much different compared to other similar SUVs with careful use.

There are several factors why jeeps are not so expensive to maintain.

The Jeep brand is known for the ruggedness and durability of its vehicle. The automotive brand designs components for its vehicles to withstand the toughest conditions and extreme use. Since Jeep vehicle components are engineered to be long-lasting and durable, the brand has a solid reputation for reliability. As a result, a Jeep vehicle is one of the most dependable vehicles you can drive.

However, there have been a few glitches along the way. Bear in mind that, like virtually all other automakers, Jeep has also recalled its vehicle several times in the past to deal with technical problems.

Overall, Jeeps are not that expensive to maintain. Average maintenance costs of Jeep models are somewhere around the national average.

Let’s get to know the different jeep models better:

Jeep Cherokee Maintenance Costs

The Jeep Cherokee’s average annual maintenance cost hovers around $520. The added benefit of owning this fine model is that its spare parts are not too expensive either. This will reduce the costs of ownership, such as maintenance costs.

For all vehicles, the national average for annual maintenance costs stands at around $650. When compared to this number, it is easy to see that Jeep Cherokee maintenance costs are substantially lower.

When you compare Jeep Cherokee maintenance costs with its peers, you will find that it is good. The national average across the compact SUV category is around $521. Hence, it is virtually equal to the national average in its category, which is fair enough.

Jeep Grand Cherokees

The average annual maintenance cost of the Jeep Grand Cherokee is around $665.

This is just a bit more than the national average of $650 for all kinds of vehicles. The good news is that spares are not too costly. The bad news is that the Jeep Grand Cherokee has had several recalls over the years due to certain repair issues. Although these repair problems may not exist in each and every Grand Jeep Cherokee, they increase the average maintenance cost.

Jeep Compass Maintenance Costs

The average maintenance cost of the Jeep Compass is a relatively low $525 per year. Also, this model happens to be the most reliable model in the Jeep range.

Jeep Compass owners can enjoy further benefits that can be obtained from the massive aftermarket. Many aftermarket brands are vying for a bigger market share in this sector. Owing to strong competition pricing is quite attractive for aftermarket parts. Jeep Compass parts are also quite affordable, which is another key plus point.

Jeep Wrangler Maintenance Costs

Jeep Wrangler is perhaps the most well-known model in the Jeep lineup.

It has an average maintenance cost of around $660 per year. This is more or less at par with the national average of $650.

Spare part prices for the Jeep Wrangler are fairly low. This, combined with the high quality of spare parts, provides good value for money.

But do note that you should not look at price alone when buying spare parts for the Jeep Wrangler or any other model for that matter. Always favor quality over the price tag.

So before finalizing your purchase decision, ensure that you research the component thoroughly. It would also be a good idea to seek the opinion of a mechanic you trust before spending cash on any component.

Jeep Renegade Maintenance Costs

Jeep Renegade maintenance costs stand at around $500, which is quite low compared to the national average.

The Renegade is considered to be a subcompact SUV. Besides the low maintenance cost, another great thing about the Jeep Renegade is that it has a fairly good record for reliability.

Jeep Gladiator Maintenance Costs

The average maintenance expense of the Jeep Gladiator is around $600. Hence, it is somewhat lower than the national average for all vehicles.

Gladiator is the model that Jeep launched for the pickup truck segment. Although it is designed for resilience, its reliability record is not particularly good. This factor could add to the cost of Jeep Gladiator maintenance.

Are Jeeps Prone to Problems?

Various models in the Jeep lineup have had to contend with one or more problems over the years.

One reason why there are technical issues is that new features are added to new generation models. Since these features are new, they are prone to more problems.

The trouble with new features is that they can certainly be tested in a controlled environment. However, the impact of the real-world environment could be quite different. It is not easy to anticipate all conditions that a model will be subjected to in the real world.

New features are tested for relatively short periods. Hence, it is not known how reliable these features will be over a longer period. It could take a few years for hidden problems to surface.

As a result, it is not unusual for technical problems to transpire. When they run into issues with the latest features. owners of the latest models who don’t have any experience with older generations are thus prone to thinking that the Jeep is problematic.

However, when you talk to Jeep owners who have long experience with the brand, you will soon find out that this notion is not true.

Other people who think that Jeep is unreliable are those who run into technical problems after buying second-hand vehicles without proper inspection and research. Unless you carry out proper inspection and research, there is a high risk that you might come into possession of a Jeep that is vulnerable to serious problems.

Hence, you should do your research before purchasing a second-hand Jeep. You can go to numerous Jeep forums where experienced users explain what you should look for when buying a second. So make a checklist of all things that should be looked into when shopping for a second-hand Jeep.

The bottom line is that a Jeep is not too expensive to maintain with light use. However, maintenance costs will likely be higher with heavy use and off-road driving on tough terrain.

Maintaining Jeep Performance

Jeeps are great for both off-road driving and going around in cities. It is a great vehicle for taking your family on a ride. The key benefit of owning a Jeep is that you can use it with equal ease both on both roads and off-road trails.

But if you will be spending most or all of your time driving on city streets, then Jeep is not the optimal choice. Since the Jeep is bigger than most other vehicles, it also has a relatively lower acceleration. The noisy cabin is also an issue to think about.

Remember that the Jeep Wrangler does not boast too much cargo space. There may be sufficient room for up to 5 people. However, the ride is not that comfortable.

However, you can think of installing a rack on the roof of your Jeep so that you can put more stuff if necessary. Another option is to invest in a trailer if you really need a lot of cargo space.

However, if you are sure that you will be taking off-road trips quite frequently on your vehicle, then the Jeep is one of the best brands you can consider. Jeep models can give you impressive stability and maneuverability on the toughest terrain.

Although the softcover top is not exactly ideal for cruising at high speeds in cities, it is just what you need for an off-road trip.

Jeep Lifespan

Apart from the maintenance cost, you also must consider how long a well-maintained Jeep can last. If you take care of maintenance and drive it carefully, you can easily expect it to last 15 to 20 years.

Bottom Line

We hope you get your answer to the question “Are Jeeps expensive to maintain?”.

If you are worried about maintenance costs, then you can keep these expenses relatively low by driving carefully and carrying out regular maintenance.

If you’ve just bought a new Cherokee and are looking for tips on how to maintain it, you have come to the right place. We are here to tell you all you need to know about your car and tell you about the only Jeep Cherokee maintenance schedule you’ll ever need.

What Makes the Cherokee Great?

The Cherokee is the 11th most popular car in the US, while its higher-end model, the Grand Cherokee, ranks 9th in the popularity charts. With a strong heritage and off-road reliability, there are a few reasons that contribute to the brand’s greatness (Jeep Cherokee SUV in-depth review – Carbuyer – YouTube).

Not Your Average Jeep

When the Cherokee first came out in 1984, the vehicle boasted a sleeker design than the Jeeps that came before it. The Cherokee was also the first Jeep with a sleek and light, unibody frame that allowed the SUV to have an impressive curb weight of 3,000 pounds.

Hauling Loads

Known for its great towing capacity, the Cherokee has always been the go-to for enthusiasts who hitch their ATVs, dirt bikes, and snowmobiles to their cars to go out for an adrenaline-packed weekend.

Off-Roading to the Limits

Built for driving on and off the road, the Cherokee boasts an impressive ground clearance and a great 4×4 drive, making it an incredible SUV to go off-roading in.

The Complete Package

The Cherokee is known for its capability as an SUV with great features and comfort and exceptional off-roading potential.

Jeep Cherokee Maintenance Schedule

Regardless of great a vehicle is, it needs to be serviced from time to time to keep it performing reliably. For this, we have put together a Jeep Cherokee maintenance schedule to help you get the best performance and longevity from your car. Regular maintenance for any car includes:

Changing consumable fluids for the brake, motor oil, radiator coolant, steering wheel, battery, and transmission.

Replacing items such as wiper blades, spark plugs, brake pads, drive belts, air filters, oil and air filters, timing belts or chains, alternator belts, and the air conditioner’s compressor belt.

Checking for leaks in hoses, particularly the radiator, as any loss of pressure caused by leaks or loose connections can damage the car.

Inspecting the braking system, power windows, sunroof and mirrors, and the steering system is essential after the car has been driven 100,000 miles.

It would be best if you inspected consumables such as wiper fluid, motor oil, brake oil, coolant levels, fuel, and tire pressure at every fuel stop. We advise doing a quick walkaround of your car every time you drive it to visually inspect for any problems.

Guide to Maintaining Your Jeep Cherokee

Basic Check-Up

The first service is due at 6,000 miles, after the car has crossed the initial break-in period, but should be conducted at every 6,000 miles. This maintenance involves:

Oil and oil filter change.

Inspect the brakes, tires, battery, and hoses.

Tire rotation to distribute wear.

Additional Inspection

Every 2 years or 20,000 miles, you should conduct some additional inspections on your Cherokee to keep yourself safe and reduce damage to the vehicle’s components. This inspection includes:

Check the condition of the braking lines and the parking brake to avoid any possible failures.

Inspect CV joints for signs of damage on the rubber present on the wheel axle or grease leaks.

Ensure that the suspension is in good working order.

Air Filter and Cabin Air Filter

The engine air filter is present in the engine bay and cleanses the air used to cool the vehicle’s engine to prevent harmful particles from entering and damaging the engine.

Cabin air filters are used to filter out dust, mold, and allergens from the air before passing through the climate control system to keep occupants of the vehicle safe.

Both air filters should be replaced every 3 years or 15,000 to 30,000 miles depending on the area you live in and your driving habits. If you take your Jeep off-roading often, you should replace the filters every 10,000 miles.

These are some tell-tale signs that you need to replace your engine air filter:

The engine seems to choke while starting up.

Sluggish acceleration.

Dark smoke from the exhaust.

A service light turns on in the gauge cluster (not applicable for older models).

Increased fuel consumption.

Odd noises while the engine idles.

Similarly, here is how you can tell that you need to swap out your cabin air filter:

Reduced airflow from the vents.

Strange sounds coming from the vents when the climate control is turned on.

A foul smell is present in the car’s cabin.

Air Conditioning

Typically, you should service the air conditioning unit of any car every 2 years. Signs that your AC needs maintenance include:

The unit doesn’t cool like it used to.

A musty smell is present when the AC is turned on.

Spark Plugs

Every 100,000 miles, you should change your Cherokee’s spark plugs for the 2.4L and the 3.2L models. For the 2.0L model, you need to change the spark plugs at intervals of 60,000 miles. Spark plugs create the spark needed to ignite fuel to start the engine and keep it running smoothly. Here are some signs that indicate you to replace your car’s spark plugs:

Bumpy or jerky ride because of inconsistent throttle response.

Poor fuel efficiency.

More toxic emissions from the exhaust can show up in state inspections.

Knocking sounds are audible from the engine due to spark plug misfiring.

Tires

The only thing that comes between your vehicle and the road is your car’s tires, so it is good practice to invest in premium tires and regularly inspect them. Checking your tire pressure every time you are at a gas station ensures good tire health and improved fuel efficiency.

You should expect tires to last between 25,000 to 50,000 miles under regular driving conditions; however, tire changes as frequently as every 10,000 miles may be needed if you go off-roading. It is good practice to inspect tires yearly 5 years after their production to ensure that they are in good condition, and they must be changed after 10 years, even if they show no signs of wear.

Tires should be immediately replaced if they start cracking or if the tire tread depth reaches 1/16th of an inch since shallow treads are highly dangerous and illegal to drive on.

Signs that You Need Maintenance

Even if you are conducting all the required maintenance on time for your Jeep Cherokee, a maintenance schedule does not guarantee that your car will be free from problems. If you notice a strange cracking noise, feel that your engine loses power while driving or the car is sluggish, or hear grinding noises, it is a good idea to have your car inspected.

At times, factors other than mileage can contribute to the deterioration of your vehicle’s consumables, such as exposure to a very dusty environment can lead to quicker degradation of your engine’s air filter. It is advisable to change your engine coolant if you see any sedimentation in the tank to avoid engine damage or erratic behavior.

If your car shows signs of rust, you should look into what is causing it and the extent of the damage to ensure that your vehicle doesn’t encounter any problems.

Reasons Why You Should Follow a Maintenance Schedule

It is essential that you service your Jeep Cherokee following a strict maintenance schedule, as this ensures that you replace aging parts when they need to be swapped out to prevent damage to other components. Regular maintenance checks help keep long-term bills low and ensure that your vehicle performs to its peak ability while maintaining reliability.

We hope that this Jeep Cherokee maintenance schedule helps you to keep your car in great running condition. If you have any questions or feedback, feel free to contact us by clicking here [link to email].

If you’ve recently purchased or are contemplating getting your hands on a Jeep, you might want to know the cost of ownership of this legendary 4×4. This blog will answer

If you’ve recently purchased or are contemplating getting your hands on a Jeep, you might want to know the cost of ownership of this legendary 4×4. This blog will answer the question potential buyers always ask: are Jeeps expensive to repair and maintain?

Generally, the automotive industry follows a simple rule: the more premium your car is, the more expensive its parts are. Some premium cars are notorious for their high ownership costs when compared to their budget counterparts. This blog will cover the most common maintenance costs incurred over the life of the car and are especially important if you are looking to buy a pre-owned Jeep.

While there is a common misconception that Jeep ownership costs are high, this is not the case. If you avoid custom modifications to your vehicle and are willing to work on your car yourself for minor problems, maintenance costs should not be too much of an issue.

Are Jeeps Expensive to Repair?

Depending on the problem, Jeeps can cost more than average to repair, compared to other vehicles in the same class. Routine inspections and proper maintenance have been known to reduce the frequency of major repairs.

Why Are Jeeps Expensive to Buy?

Jeeps are premium vehicles that comprise SUVs that target customers looking for crossovers or off-road vehicles. They are renowned for their versatility and their exceptional reliability through all types of terrain and weather conditions.

Over the years, Jeep has proven itself as a manufacturer of highly reliable vehicles that offer great value to customers. With added performance features such as higher horsepower engines and greater towing capacity, while also providing excellent off-road reliability, Jeep offers more to customers than its competitors do.

Customers in the US have also shown a greater interest in the SUV category due to their practicality, thereby causing a demand surge. There are also fanatics of the modifications that they can do to their Jeeps, which increases the vehicles’ resale value.

However, once a customer invests in a Jeep, the vehicle’s overall cost of ownership is relatively low, apart from a few model years with known faults. Since the cost of every variant and model year varies slightly, we will look at the average cost of maintaining a Jeep.

https://youtu.be/NdfpAwjMsUoVideo can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: Why Are Jeeps So Expensive? (https://youtu.be/NdfpAwjMsUo)

Brakes Can Break

This one is a no-brainer. Whether you are driving in the city, hitting the back roads, or going for an off-road adventure, it won’t be long before you need to replace your brakes. An average Jeep’s brakes last between 30,000 to 70,000 miles depending on your driving style and what terrain you drive on.

Do note that all you need to do is to replace the brake pads rather than the rotors themselves as the latter wear out slower. Not replacing worn brake pads can lead to damaged rotors, so watch out for these indications to know when maintenance work is due:

Screeching noises can be heard while applying the brakes.

A warning light in the gauge cluster lights up.

When you visually inspect your brake pads and less than a quarter inch is left.

A grinding noise indicates that the brake pads have worn away and are now making contact with your vehicle’s discs or drums, which can rack up a hefty repair cost if not tended to immediately.

A burning smell indicates that the pads are wearing out or are installed incorrectly.

The cost of the brakes depends on which ones you opt to install; however, the average cost falls in line with other vehicles.

Tires Get Tired Too

Tires are the only thing between you and the road and are among the most essential safety components. You should never skimp out by purchasing cheap off-brand tires because this can put your and others’ lives at risk.

The stock tires on your Jeep last between 50,000 to 60,000 miles. However, off-roading on rugged terrain can tremendously reduce their lifespan. Tire prices greatly vary depending on the compound, size, and brand you buy.

It is always good to pay attention to when your tires need to be swapped out by checking for these signs:

1. Check Tire Tread Depth and Indication Bars

Ensure that the tread depth is at least 1/16 of an inch. The shallower the tread, the lesser traction you get which translates to more significant safety risks and more wear on the brakes. Newer tires have indication bars on the tread so that you know when you should get new tires.

2. Look for Cracks and Bulges

If you notice crack lines on tires or one more of them seem visibly uneven, stop driving. These can lead to catastrophic accidents because of tires blowing out at high speeds. Both of these can happen as the rubber compound degenerates with age, even if the tire is unused.

3. Exposed Tire Wires

If you drive hard, as every Jeep owner should, then your tires might wear out faster. If you waited long enough to ignore the above signs, then there is a high chance that the wires that give your tire rigidity will become exposed due to excessive wear. When you reach this point, you NEED new tires.

4. Excessive Vibrations

If you feel unusual vibrations coming from the car when you drive it at high speeds, then you should have them inspected and balanced.

5. Alignment

Make sure that you get your wheels aligned after you swap out tires or drive through rough terrain. Poor wheel alignment results in faster and more uneven tire wear, steering drift, and vibrations through the steering wheel, making driving uncomfortable.

Transmission Failure

The transmission is the heart of your vehicle, and like all other car parts, it requires maintenance. Transmission repair and replacement costs are high, and if you are buying a used Jeep or are curious about the signs of a faulty transmission block, you have come to the right place. Here are a few signs that indicate transmission failure:

Your vehicle doesn’t move after you put it into gear.

The gears shift sluggishly and your engine hits the higher revs before shifting.

Transmission fluid leaks can be seen under the car.

There is a burning smell and your transmission fluid levels seem to be falling.

The transmission is making peculiar noises.

Warning lights turn on in the gauge cluster.

If you prefer a manual transmission, then you might hear the cursed sound of gears grinding while shifting, and your clutch might grab either too high or too low.

The good news is swapping out the transmission and the engine costs about the same as other vehicles. Since these components are on the more expensive side for all vehicles, we recommend replacing parts that show more signs of wear early on to avoid damaging other components.

Suspension Trouble

You have a hefty off-roader with a suspension to match the ruggedness of the most extreme conditions. However, some factors can lead to the suspension wearing out faster, such as age, accidents, and your driving style. Here’s how you can inspect your suspension:

Check if the strut mounts of your vehicle are showing signs of corrosion or damage. You can inspect these by opening the hood and inspecting the mechanism that pokes out of the front fenders.

Inspect the height of both sides from the ground. If the height difference is within a variance of 2.5 cm, then your suspension wear on both sides is balanced. However, there might be some other suspension problem that you can get diagnosed by a mechanic.

Lift the car using a jack and inspect for rust and signs of damage. Make sure to inspect the bushings as these improve the quality of the ride and serve as noise dampeners.

Inspect the tie rods for damage.

If your car is still driving poorly after you have conducted your inspection, look out for these signs:

Bumpy ride.

The vehicle drifts to one side.

Steering difficulties.

Tires wear out unevenly.

The car swerves when brakes are applied.

Have your Jeep looked at by certified professionals to sort out all issues? Doing so prevents racking up an outrageous bill. For example, the damage to other parts from not replacing suspension bushings is significantly more significant than just getting new bushings.

Insurance

Your insurance premium varies depending on your credit score, insurance history, and the particular model and year of the Jeep you are looking to buy. Newer and more expensive models will be more expensive when compared to older models.

Gas-powered vehicles are also cheaper to insure when compared to their diesel or electric-powered counterparts. In fact, the Jeep Wrangler was one of the cheapest new vehicles to insure in 2020.

Body Parts and Mods

The Jeep has a cult-like following and a community full of modders which encourages aftermarket parts to be commonly available. Stock parts and performance-centric components are commonly available. Owners can buy aftermarket parts to make their vehicles stand out from the rest.

Fierce competition in the market has allowed these parts to be competitively priced, making them more affordable to end-users.

Fuel – Your Mileage May Vary

The biggest concern for 4×4 owners is the amount of fuel their vehicles use up and rightly so. Newer Jeeps have better-combined fuel efficiency; however, it is still not great. The 2020 1.3-liter FWD Renegade holds the crown for the best fuel efficiency, boasting a slightly above average 27 MPG of combined city and highway driving when the average is around 25 MPG. Unfortunately, the rest of the Jeep family is not as fuel-efficient, despite improvements over previous model years.

Maintain Today for a Less Expensive Tomorrow

Remember, you have to take care of your car to ensure that it is reliable. Make sure to protect your vehicle’s paint and ensure that you check all the engine fluids. A good practice is to check every component every month and top everything off to ensure that your car remains trouble-free.

Taking care of your tires is also important. When you go off-roading, make sure to reduce the tire pressure a bit to increase traction, but fill back up to the pressure advised by the owner’s manual that comes with your particular model.

Leaving the Trail

Wrapping it all up, the cost of ownership of Jeeps is not as high as people make it out to be. We have all come across the acronym that Jeep stands for “Just Empty Every Pocket”; however, this is not true unless you install enthusiast-grade components in your vehicle.

Jeeps can be a bit hefty on the bank account when you buy them, but they rack up additional maintenance costs between $10 – 20 annually compared to other vehicles. If you are into off-roading, this is a small premium to pay for what these vehicles can do. After reading this, what do you think: are Jeeps expensive to repair?

Just got yourself a new Jeep Wrangler? If so, and you just can’t wait to go off-road and test out this beast of a 4×4, first brush up on the basics on maintaining it and keeping it in shape.

The easiest way to maintain your off-roader is to wash it with a low-pressure washer before taking it into the car wash to eliminate any risks of rust damage. But not all of us have the time or equipment to do so ourselves, so what should you do instead?

If you’re wondering whether or not you can take a soft-top Jeep Wrangler through the car wash, this article is for you!

My first car was a soft-top Wrangler and I’ve owned one ever since. I’ve been through all the struggles of keeping it clean and have put together this article to help you do the same.

Can You Take a Soft Top Jeep Wrangler Through a Carwash?

You should avoid taking your Soft Top Wrangler through a carwash at all costs. The top-rollers of an automatic car wash can damage and cause wear and tear on the soft roof of your Jeep. However, you can safely take your soft top Wrangler through a brushless car wash, since they don’t use rollers or brushes.

Before we plunge deeper into the topic, we need to brush up on a few basics about soft top jeeps.

Not All Jeep Tops are Created Equal

While you can swap out your hard top for a soft top and vice versa on your Jeep, there are differences in the soft top configurations., which are discussed below:

Vinyl Tops: Found on older YJ models or the CJ Jeep Wrangler as the default configuration, these tops are reasonably easy to clean and maintain, making them an excellent choice for Jeep owners.

Denim: These tops boast a vintage aesthetic and are common because they are affordable and come pre-installed on many TJ and YJ Wranglers.

Sailcloth: Second to only twill tops, sailcloth was the high-quality soft top of choice for many Wrangler owners. With two layers for weather and noise resistance, this top delivered value for those who opted to pay the premium for it.

Twill: A high-end material that comes with a price tag to match. You might come across twill soft tops in luxury cars as they are insulated to reduce road noise.

Note that soft tops generally last between 3 to 5 years, after which they start wearing out. You can opt to switch over to another soft top after that or get a hard top compatible with your vehicle.

Maintenance Challenges

Regardless of the type of soft top your Wrangler comes with, the manufacturer, Jeep warns against taking your vehicle to an automatic carwash or using high pressure washers. The bristles of the brushes used and the high pressure can end up seeping water into the vehicle’s interior, voiding warranty for these components.

Furthermore, wax and harsh chemicals can cause residue formation on the soft top’s windows.

With the risks of potential damage to your Wrangler, we do not recommend taking it to an automatic car wash, unlike its more robust, hard top counterpart. However, keeping the soft top in good shape is possible, albeit more care is required. The good thing is that a soft top needs cleaning at intervals of once every 1 to 3 months, depending on the environmental conditions of where you live. We have highlighted some practices that you can follow to keep your car clean.

Keeping It Clean

If you’re new to the world of soft tops, you might be used to blasting dirt off your car with a power washer. However, when it comes to soft tops the same pressure might actually damage the weather-strip seals. While washing it by hand takes more time and energy it is still the recommended route to take for your soft top. Here are a few things that you can try to keep your soft top clean:

Using Soft Top Cleaners

Soft top cleaners are gentle chemicals that do not damage the fabric of your top. Since the top absorbs some of the chemicals during the washing process, using harsh chemicals can lead to discoloration, which can be challenging to treat.

The soft top should also be processed to rejuvenate the hydrophobic coating every six months since this tends to degrade over time and can lead to leaks and rots in the roof. Here’s what you should do for DIY maintenance of your soft top Jeep:

Park in a shaded area so that the cleaning materials don’t dry out too fast.

Use a vacuum cleaner to remove any dirt from the top.

Rinse the Jeep with low-pressure clean water.

Apply a soft top cleaner, gently scrub it with a soft nylon brush, and leave it on for an hour.

Rinse and dab with a soft cloth.

Lubricate the Zippers

The elements and mud on off-road trails aren’t kind to your Wrangler. Make sure that you use appropriate cleaners and lubricants that keep your soft top’s zipper moving smoothly. If you feel that the zip’s resistance has increased, ensure to lubricate it to prevent any damage.

Use the Right Materials

Getting a pack of soft microfiber cloth can be great for car care. We recommend keeping four pieces of fabric for cleaning your car:

Interior

Vehicle’s body

Roof

Tires

Ensure that you thoroughly wash the cloth before and after cleaning to prevent trapped dirt from scratching your vehicle. We recommend getting a soft-bristled nylon brush to tend to your roof if it gets too dirty. Never use a brush that has stiff bristles as this not only can damage the roof but also scuff your soft top’s windows.

Use the Right Window Cleaner

It can be trickier to maintain the windows of a soft top as compared to a hard top, so we have a few tips that can make your Jeep stay in mint condition even after you have had it for a while.

https://youtu.be/7-uJU0O-4PYVideo can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: Soft Top Window Cleaning & Restoration (https://youtu.be/7-uJU0O-4PY)

Here’s what you should do:

Rinse your windows with clean water.

Apply the window cleaning wax or polish of your choice using a microfiber cloth.

Use gentle, circular motions to get the window clean.

Avoid applying the chemical to the soft top, but if you accidentally do, don’t worry, as you can clean it off pretty quickly.

Allow the cleaner to dry before wiping it off to get spotless windows.

Don’t Forget the Rest of Your Car

Remember that while your soft top is a unique component that requires more care than other car components, the rest of your vehicle deserves the same love too. Make sure you wash your car’s chassis and under the wheel arches every time you get back from off-roading to prevent mud from caking up and damaging your vehicle.

Make sure to detail your car’s body using polish and wax to get the most shine out of your vehicle. Always use a soft clean microfiber cloth to prevent scratching, and if you want to keep that paint safe, we recommend having your vehicle either glass, ceramic, or nano-coated to help preserve its shine. If you want to refresh your car’s look, you can go for a car wrap.

Finally, it is essential to maintain your vehicle’s tires by using tire polish that enhances the look of your tires and protects them from additional wear.

Tips for Hard Tops

If you’ve made it so far and are looking for a new top for your Jeep, or are reading this before buying a new Wrangler to see how much more maintenance a soft top requires, this section will help you out.

We found that hard tops are generally easier to maintain, but it all comes down to whether you want that authentic wind in your hair off-road experience or prefer something easier to maintain. You can take your hard top to the car wash like any other regular car and detail it like any other hard top.

Here are a few pros and cons of hard and soft tops so that you can decide accordingly:
